Dr. Brenke’s conclusion is that how far the infrared waves penetrate into the skin depends largely on the wavelength, but it also depends on spectral reflection and your skin’s absorption properties. As with visible light, up to half of the shortwave infrared A radiation is not absorbed by the skin. However, reflection rate of your skin is much lower in the B and C ranges. There, reflection is usually at 3 to 8%. How much your skin will absorb is largely determined by water content. Most infrared B and C radiation is absorbed at the skin’s surface, whereas if you are exposed to infrared A radiation, it will penetrate more deeply into your skin and is also absorbed in deeper skin layers. The effects and sensation of the heat radiation depends on where the heat receptors are located.
These receptors are located in the upper layers of skin, closer to its surface. Therefore, these would be irritated much more by the longwave infrared B and C radiation than by the shortwave infrared A.
This results in two effects, which either becoming overheated from the exposure or by experiencing pain. Usually, you are not as exposed to infrared B or C because you will be warned off exposure relatively early in the process by either becoming overheated or even experiencing pain, which can prevent overheating and potential injury.
